WICK’S memorial garden will be alive with colour next springtime thanks to a planting session at the site this week.
It’s the latest phase in the development of the garden in Bank Row which commemorates the victims of two wartime bombing raids on the town 70 years ago.
The site was a hive of activity on Tuesday as over 1000 spring-flowering bulbs were planted by members of the memorial garden group assisted by volunteers from a Pulteneytown People’s Project youth initiative.
Yvonne Hendry, secretary of Second World War Air Raid Victims – Wick, said: “Five people from PPP volunteered to help with the planting and they all worked really hard so we’re very grateful to them. We hope to have some nice spring colour in the garden next year.â€
The group has also purchased two bird boxes which will be installed at a later date.
The garden was officially opened at the end of August. It honours the memory of 15 people who died in an air raid on Bank Row in July 1940 and three others who lost their lives in an attack on Hill Avenue in October of the same year.
