You may have been giving some thought to organising and co-ordinating events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year. All the various local voluntary organisations, community councils and groups are being encouraged to take part in this historic event by building and lighting one or more beacons on Monday 4th June 2012.
As the organisers are aiming to light 2,012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories and the Commonwealth, it will be impossible to see one beacon from another on the night. With this in mind, these beacons can therefore be lit at locations easily accessible by communities, so do not necessarily have to be lit on high hill-tops.
The beacons can be used as a fundraising vehicle for local charities, or could be organised as private celebrations for family and friends. So it is important that, when completing and returning the registration form, those taking part should tick the box if they do not want to receive publicity for their beacon and any associated event. They should return it by post, email to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or register their event online at http://www.diamondjubileebeacons.co.uk by no later than 30th April 2012.
All beacon locations, along with the organisations undertaking them, will be put on a special book that will be given to Her Majesty after the event, as a lasting reminder of the moment in history being celebrated.
Any local group interested in getting involved can pick up a guide to taking part from the Caithness Voluntary Group office.
