Carers Week 2017 Monday 12 to Sunday 18 June

With Carers Week  fast approaching there is an opportunity for you to join in and get involved in walk 500

Connecting Carers is the Carer Centre for Highland and provide support, guidance and information to unpaid carers.  Our Advocacy and Counselling teams are available to give free help when carers need to have their voices heard or when they need someone to listen.  Our Carer Liaison Workers work with carers to ensure that they have access to up to date information to help in their caring roles and, where possible, access to respite giving them a life outside their caring role.

WALK 500 is about:

  • Raising awareness of unpaid carers in Highland
  • Showing support and gratitude for unpaid carers in Highland
  • Having FUN

So why take part?

It's easy!   You can join any walk throughout the week, walk with a support group, walk with friends, family, your dog or set up a group walk of your own.

It's good for you!  Walking is proven to help with mood, gives you head-space (time to think), is a great workout and can reduce the risk of serious illness and diseases, can reduce blood pressure and can lower the risk of obesity (if done regularly).
It's a great way of giving back!  It doesn't cost anything and raises awareness of unpaid carers in Highland who make a huge difference to the lives of those they care for.

On your own or with your friends?

You don't have to be part of an organised walk to take part in WALK500 – you can record the steps you take walking the dog, doing the shopping, picking the kids up from school.  You can log steps on a daily basis or at the end of the week – it doesn't matter.  What matters is taking part.

There are some walks happening around Highland but if there isn't one near you then why not get a group of friends together and go for a walk (with a picnic or cake) and add in all your steps.  Groups have got some great ideas for walks aready including climbing a mountain in the Cairngorms (but you don't need to go that far).  Every steps counts so please register and be part of WALK500 – raising awareness of Unpaid Carers in Highland during Carers Week 2017.
